Geographic possition

Municipal Žitorađa is located in the southeastern part of Serbia, in the Toplica region, 10 km far from the corridor ten which connects Serbia with the Foreign Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Greece and further towards Eastern countries. Žitorađa is 35 km to the south-west from Niš,and is Niš centered since it is the economic political, and cultural centre. There are18900 inhabitants in 30 inhabited places.

History

First records of Žitorada, as an inhabited region, date from IV century, as an old Byzantine city “Žitoradsko kale”. The “Latin church” located in Glašinac, a village near Žitorada, dates from this period. In VII century “Zitoradsko kale” was inhabited by Slavic people.

- 1877. Žitorada is liberated from long term Turkish slavery. This event is considered the founding year of our municipal.

Arheological exavacion

Famous and extremely interesting archeological excavations are ‘Kale’ on the mountain Pasjača where you can find the remains of an ancient Roman city ’Ad Hercules’, then ‘Glasinska cuka’ near the village Glasinac, and the ‘Latin church’ which dates from IV century.
